Halloween 2002: Etch-A-Sketch
(a.k.a. "A Bridge Too Far")

This year I broke out of my series of spherical costumes and went for my most technically challenging costume yet - a full-sized, working, Etch-A-Sketch. The good news was that it was a BIG hit and people loved it, that despite the bad news: It only worked successfully for about 4 hours <SIGH> & most of that was before I got to the Castro....

Turning the knobs manipulated a series of strings connecting to a dry-erase marker on the inside of the costume. The dry-erase marker wrote on the backside of a translucent sheet of plastic. What was drawn was clearly visible on the front side of the plastic, on the outside of the costume.....You can see more details in the "making of" section below- but unfortunately, it was all pretty delicate AND didn't hold up for long. So after it broke, I just let people turn the knobs & while I drew on the screen from inside.... amusingly enough, no one really cared & many thought it was still really working.....

Next time I'll make a better one....

In addition to the my pictures from the Castro, there is a gallery of pictures fom making the Etch-A-Sketch but they are provided more as a cautionary tale! If yo decide to do an Etch-A-Sketch - do it diferently - I already have a few ideas for a possible 2.0....
