FlashDance 6: We’re baaaaack!

Two weeks ago (03/10/2007) we kicked off the FlashDance season for 2007 with a bang at Pier 7 & as per usual much fun was had. Here’s my report – or you can just skip to the playlist below….. (If you don’t know what a FlashDance is click here)

Like every time I do a FlashDance, there is this moment of dread that always seems to attack me a few hours before the event & leaves me wanting to hide rather than go put on a FlashDance. It usually involves the 1-2 punch of my reluctance to spend the time getting all my gear together (when I could be relaxing from my full-to-the-gills life) and all my fears about what may go wrong. These two issues always seem combine to overwhelm my standard optimisim & general enjoyment of FlashDance in the hours leading up to one. Luckily, this time around, the latter half of my moment of dread ended up saving the evening 🙂

Basically, I had bought a new sound system to pump up the volume but had pretty much decided NOT to bother testing it out since it is conceptually the same as my old system, just more powerful and I was exhausted and recovering from a cold. Now as an engineer, I know better than to deploy new technology that I have never tested, but you have to understand that for months now my inner engineer has been running roughshod over my inner slacker (I’ve been working CRAZY hours on my team’s latest project) & my laziness had had enough. Thus I *REALLY* just wanted to sit around and chill. I had almost convinced myself that I wasn’t going to test and all would be well: I would just strap the new equipment to my bike & head on out to FD. But that is when the moment of dread descended & the specter of system not working AFTER I had biked it all the way over to the location ignited my inner engineer & I knew I SHOULD test things…

Thus, about 2 hours before FD, I set up all my components in front of my house & fired them up. Sure enough, the system didn’t work. Ack! I knew I could fall back to the old system, but one of the things I was most looking forward to was trying out the new hotness. ACK!

Using my vast understanding of electronics, I decided to call my friend Eric who actually had a vast understanding of electronics & we were able to scrape together a replacement component to fix the issue. (Thank god for the equipment we use for Dolores Park Movie Night) And lo the FlashDance was saved! But thank god for my moment of dread 🙂

Having to deal with all those shenanigans made me a little later to FD but we just went longer to compensate, and after all the drama, I’d say the FD6 was well worth it 🙂 It was a beautiful early spring night along SF’s viewtatastic waterfront & we had a full house of folks and much dancing ensued. This one was maybe slightly bigger than the last few with perhaps 115 people dancing at its biggest and maybe 130 people showing up over the course of the whole night…. Here is the playlist (well a reconstructed version, I didn’t save the actual playlist – so I THINK this accurate)

  1. Thanks for doing this, again! It was awesome. If you need help setting these up in the future, somehow, let me know. I don’t have valuable electronics skills beyond the basic CS person, but I can lift things, bike things, organize things, and greet things. 🙂
